Project Description
In a small courtyard bordered by three important Minneapolis arts institutions, we were given the task of creating a stage-like or refuge-type space with raised and lowered planes.
My analysis of the site revealed the need for greater interaction between these institutions within this courtyard space. This was to be fulfilled with social seating and a clear connected path from our corner to the rest of the site to ultimately create a stage-like space for interaction.
In designing, I chose to work with a large circular form already found in the courtyard. I terraced the space to allow for outward-oriented seating areas. From here I explored the interaction of circles and terraces to form spaces that people could interact in. Smaller intimate spaces took the form of circles pressed in the landscape for sitting and relaxing. Two lines of trees visually link the entrace to the building in our corner to the other entraces across the courtyard.
